Buttercup Cafe, Andes, NY

I have mixed feelings about this next post.  Part of me is dying to share with Pantry readers this truly awesome new cafe I recently discovered, and part of me wants to keep it a closely guarded secret.  As the place in question is fairly much well off the beaten track (about 2 1/2 hours from NYC or our part of New Jersey) and therefore the chances of 'the masses' discovering it and ruining the charm is very slim, I have decided to share!

Buttercup Cafe is the newest establishment to open in the quaint town of Andes in the Catskills region of NY.  This Andes is decidedly more accessible than it's South American namesake, and on a sunny August morning it was far warmer too.  After dropping our boys off to build a shed (more about that in my next post) Mum, Liv and I decided to have brunch in a nearby town.  We were in search of coffee and good food and found Buttercup just in time before the 4 year old had a meltdown ... well admittedly it was after 11am!

Along with a fabulous cafe serving 'farm to table' local produce fare, there is also a small foodstore selling local cheeses, meats and baked goods - the pastries were fantastic!).  The setting is 'rustic farmhouse' with a good touch of vintage.  You can sit inside the old homestead or outside at communal style picnic tables with the backdrop of an old ramshackle barn.  The little touches like good cutlery, and interestingly presented dishes did not go unnoticed!  And the food....?  Phenomenal!  Apparently chef Chris McGee even surprises owners Peter Mullin and Victoria Charkut (he worked in finance, she was an actress in NYC before they relocated here) with his creations.

We were in the mood for eggs so I went with the poached ones on polenta with roasted tomatoes and pesto, while Mum had an unbelievably good omelette filled with goat cheese and (we think) steamed chard.  Liv was super happy with the honey almond croissant and her special kid sized apple juice.  No kids menu here or the ubiquitous mass produced pancakes - instead just wonderfully fresh food and fantastic service.

Buttercup is located at 22 Lee Lane in Andes, NY and open from 11-4pm Thursday to Sunday to catch weekenders and locals alike. We will definitely be returning soon (to try the homemade ice cream!) and so should you!

Nikki xx
